Day 2: Our Compass!

Because GOD IS TOTALLY TRUTHFUL, I can trust what the Bible says is true, and live by it.

Read or quote the memory verse.

NOTE: The following activity will work best if you have a compass. If you don't have a compass, you can mark the directions on the floor with small objects so your kids can see where north is. If there is any way for you to get a compass, it is a great tool to have as a reminder of God's truth. If you have a smartphone, there are free compass apps available for download.

Have your child stand up and give him the following instructions:

"Close your eyes; raise one arm and point straight ahead. Keeping your eyes closed, spin around three times. Without opening your eyes, point in the direction you think is north. Open your eyes. Did you point in the right direction? Using the compass, determine which direction is north. Are you confident that the compass will always point north? If you didn't have a compass, would you be able to know for sure which direction is north? Just like a compass always points north, God always points you toward truth because He is Totally Truthful and should always be our anchor point."

Listen to what Proverbs 30:5 says.

Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to Him for protection. Discover God Bible, (NLT).

How much of God's Word proves to be true? 50%, 99%, 100%? (100%)

Read John 17:17.

Make them holy by Your truth; teach them Your word, which is truth.Discover God Bible, (NLT).

Jesus was praying for His disciples when He asked God, "Make them holy by your truth; teach them Your word which is truth." Jesus didn't say "Your word which is almost always truth." Fill in the blank: Jesus said that God's Word "____ truth." (Is)

Jesus knew God's Word and He knew it was totally true. When He faced His greatest enemy, God's Word was His greatest weapon.

Let's read about when the devil tried to trick Jesus in Matthew 4:1-11.

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. For forty days and forty nights He fasted and became very hungry. During that time the devil came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread."

But Jesus told him, "No! The Scriptures say, 'People do not live by bread alone, but by every Word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

Then the devil took Him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, "If You are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, 'He will order His angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won't even hurt your foot on a stone.'"

Jesus responded, "The Scriptures also say, 'You must not test the Lord your God.'"

Next the devil took Him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. "I will give it all to You," he said, "if You will kneel down and worship me."

"Get out of here, Satan," Jesus told him. "For the Scriptures say, 'You must worship the Lord your God and serve only Him.'"

Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.
Matthew 4:1-11, Discover God Bible, (NLT).

Satan kept trying to get Jesus to do something Jesus knew would not honor God.

What did Jesus do each time? (He told Satan what the Bible said. He quoted Scripture.)

Jesus used the Bible when facing temptation! It was His compass, and it is our compass too! The best way to know what truth is is to know God's Word, the Bible. What can you do to know the Bible better?(Read it, memorize it.)

Why does it matter?

Because God is Totally Truthful, you can be confident that His Word, the Bible, is Totally Truthful. It is your compass when you are lost, your encouragement when you are sad or discouraged, and your source of advice when you don't know what to do.
