Part 1: God is the Perfect Judge!

Because GOD IS JUST, I know He will always treat me fairly!

Talk about the role of a judge. What does a judge do? What does it take to be a good judge?

If you were accused of a crime you didn't commit, what kind of judge would you hope to present your case? (Honest, trustworthy, fair...)

Today, we're beginning the adventure of discovering that God is the best Judge ever!

The Bible says:

He is the rock; His deeds are perfect. Everything He does is just and fair. He is a faithful God Who does no wrong; how just and upright He is!~Deuteronomy 32:4, Discover God Bible (NLT).

What kind of judge does this verse say God is?

Is it possible for a human judge to ALWAYS be just and fair? Why or why not?

What keeps a judge from being just and fair? (He doesn't always know all the facts; he can be pressured to make the wrong judgment by someone more powerful; he is a sinner himself.)

When you walk into most courtrooms, you will find that the place where the judge sits is higher than any other seat in the room. The judge sits higher as a symbol of authority and power. When someone is on trial, his or her fate is in the hands of the judge. This can be a good thing or a bad thing.

Evidence Proves Innocent!

In May of 1978, an anonymous phone caller told police that four men living in Chicago had committed a horrible crime. Dennis Williams, Verneal Jimerson, Kenny Adams, and Willie Rainge were arrested and soon convicted of the crime. The men insisted they were innocent, but the judge declared them guilty and had them taken to prison.

Eighteen years later, new evidence was sent to the police department. The evidence proved that the men from Chicago were indeed innocent! Judge Thomas Fitzgerald overturned (reversed) their convictions and the prisoners were released. The evidence also helped the police capture the real criminals.

What caused the first judge to make the wrong decision in this case? (He didn't have all the evidence.)

If God had been sitting in the judge's seat, His attributes would have made sure that He judged the case correctly:

  • Because God is Righteous, His actions and decisions are always right 100% of the time.
  • Because God is Holy (perfect and clean), He can't be bribed.
  • Because God Knows Everything, He never misses an important piece of evidence; He already has all the facts.
  • Because God is Everywhere, He's an eyewitness to everything we do. He doesn't have to depend on someone else's account of what happened.
  • Because God is All Powerful, no one can force Him to judge incorrectly.

Remember, God is not only Just. He is also all of these other things. To say God is the Judge without remembering that God is Love or God is Merciful would make us think that God is mean or uncaring (God's Justice does not contradict any of His other character qualities; otherwise, God would contradict Himself.). He judges all sin, but He loves and cares for the person who sinned.

He is the rock; His deeds are perfect. Everything He does is just and fair. He is a faithful God Who does no wrong; how just and upright He is!~Deuteronomy 32:4, Discover God Bible (NLT).

Why does it matter?

Because God is Just, He is the Perfect Judge, and we can trust in His decisions.
