Part 1: God is Holy - Through and Through!

Because GOD IS HOLY (Perfect and Clean), He is able to make my dirty heart clean. I want Him to help me keep it that way.

God is Holy. He is perfect in every way, totally pure with no evil in Him. No other religion worships a Holy (perfect and clean) God.

Listen to a story about two false gods people believed in a long time ago:

Who's the Most Beautiful of All?

Aphrodite stood in front of the grand mirror on Mt. Olympus, home of the gods, and asked, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?" Not waiting for an answer, she turned away. "Silly me," she laughed. "I am, of course!"

It was true... most of the time. Although the goddess of love and beauty was stunningly gorgeous, pride darkened her beauty and twisted her love. Everyone knew Aphrodite could be cruel when her status as "most beautiful of all" was challenged.

One day, rumors reached Mt. Olympus that there was a woman on earth whose beauty had captured the hearts of many men. Her admirers declared the mortal to be more beautiful than Aphrodite herself. The goddess of beauty and love did what any self-respecting, selfish, spoiled false god would do: she plotted her revenge.

First, she chased away all the men who wanted to be the woman's husband. Next she went to her son, Cupid, and demanded, "Go to earth and shoot the ugly wench with one of your special arrows of love. Be sure it will make her fall in love with a wild animal - the most vicious one you can find!" The wicked love goddess laughed at her cunning scheme. "When she tries to get near the beast, it will attack her and kill her!"

Cupid intended to do what his mother asked, but even though he was a god like his mother, he had one little problem. Cupid could be a bit... clumsy. Just as he was about to shoot the beautiful woman with his arrow of love, he accidentally nicked himself with the arrow. Instead of making the woman fall in love with a wild animal, the arrow made Cupid fall in love with the very woman his mother wanted dead! Poor Cupid!

How did Aphrodite and Cupid show they were definitely NOT holy (perfect and clean) in every way? (They were mean, revengeful, and they couldn't even make their own plan work right. Aphrodite was afraid of someone being more beautiful than she was. God is perfect; He doesn't have to make others look bad so that He'll look good!)

It's hard to imagine people would believe in such silly gods, but they did.

The Bible says:

Who is like You among the gods, O Lord -- glorious in holiness, awesome in splendor, performing great wonders?Exodus 15:11, Discover God Bible, (NLT).

There isn't anyone who is like God because no one is perfect! The fact that God is Holy (Perfect, Clean and without evil) ensures that every attribute of God is Perfect, Clean, and without evil.

Let's imagine how different God would be if He were not Holy. What difference would that make?

For example, look at the following attributes:

God Is the Biggest and Strongest

If God is not Holy, perfect and clean, could He be the Biggest and the Strongest? Why not?

If God is not Perfect, then God would not be perfectly strong. Someone might come along who's stronger. If God is not Totally Clean, then He might decide to use His strength for evil rather than good (like Aphrodite tried to use her power to keep men from marrying the girl that made her jealous).

God Is Love

If God is not Holy, perfect and clean, can His Love be perfect and pure? Why not?

If God is not Perfect, Clean, and Holy, then God's love can't be perfect either. You won't be able to count on His love for you or for others. God might become jealous of you the way Aphrodite became jealous. She may have been called the goddess of love, but do you want her kind of love?

The Bible says:

Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God, the Almighty--the One who always was, who is, and who is still to come.Revelation 4:8, Discover God Bible, (NLT).

You see, if God is not Perfect, Clean, and Holy, then God is nothing more than a storybook god--fake and powerless--like Aphrodite and Cupid. Aren't you glad His love and power are perfect and clean!

Why does it matter?

Because God is Perfect, Clean, and Holy, you can be sure that He has no evil in Him. God's perfect character sets Him apart from every other living being and makes Him the One True God who deserves our worship.
