Part 4: Mercy and Consequences!

Because GOD IS MERCIFUL, I know He forgives me when I sincerely ask in Jesus' name!

Read or quote the memory verse.

Let's read a story Jesus told to help people understand God's love and mercy.

Luke 15:11-25 (The Parable of the Lost Son).

Jesus told them this story:

"A man had two sons. The younger son told his father, 'I want my share of your estate now before you die.' So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons.

"A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living. About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and a man sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything.

"When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, 'At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, "Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant."'

"So, he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. His son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.'

"But his father said to the servants, 'Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.' So the party began."Discover God Bible, (NLT).

The younger son had blown it big time, and he knew it!

After he had spent all his money, what were the consequences of his bad choices? (He was starving. He had to work feeding the pigs, which for a Jew was the worst job imaginable. He was so hungry that he ate pig food. None of his friends would help him.)

What did he hope for when he went back to his father's house? (To be allowed to work as a servant and have good food to eat.)

What did he get when he went home? (A welcome home party.)

The father loved his son even though he had made bad choices, and when he came home and asked for mercy, the father was excited to give it!

God is always thrilled to give us mercy when we accept Jesus' payment for our sins, tell Him about our sins, and ask His forgiveness. However, it doesn't mean that we won't have to live with some of the consequences of our sin.

The younger son had spent all his inheritance. He was welcomed home, but he didn't receive his inheritance back. He had already spent it.

Let's read a story about Tommy and how he learned about mercy and consequences.

The Mercy Story: Tommy and the Rope Swing!

Today was the big day. Tommy Barton was seven years old, and that meant he was finally old enough to ride the rope swing over the lake and fly into the pond below. Grandfather had said that it was too dangerous for anyone under seven. Tommy thought the rule was silly. He knew he could do it, but Grandfather said he loved him too much to risk the danger. Well, today he was seven, and as he stood at the water's edge holding the rope and planning his jump, Tommy felt a surge of pride. The jump was better than he had imagined. Soaring through the air, he let go at the perfect moment. He was sure he looked like a super hero flying through the air. Curling into a cannon ball, Tommy hit the water with a huge splash. "I'd like to see Will make a splash that big!" he thought as he swam toward the surface. "Being seven is great!"

The entire day had been perfect. "There's only one thing that would make it better," Tommy thought later as he got ready for bed. He glanced at the new book his mom had given him. "It would be so great to take the lantern and read my new book in the hay loft!" He remembered Grandfather's warning about the lantern in the barn. "You're too young, Tommy. Just a small flame can start a fire that would burn down the entire barn. No, son, you need to wait until you're much older."

Tommy looked at his book and imagined the fun of reading by lantern light just like the pioneers. "I'm not too young anymore," he told himself. "I'm seven!" He ignored the guilt that nagged at him. He took up the book and the lantern and headed to the barn.

Reading in the hay loft by lantern light was great! The sounds of the night and the soft glow of the lantern made the adventure book come to life. Suddenly a gust of wind burst through the barn window and blew the lantern over. Hay caught fire before Tommy could set the lantern upright and soon the flames were spreading across the loft. He slid down the ladder and ran for the house.

The family fought to save the barn throughout the night. The next morning, soot stained and exhausted, Tommy stood with his grandfather looking at the remains of the barn. "I'm so sorry Grandpa," he said tearfully. "You told me not to read with the lantern... I thought I was old enough. Now look what happened. It's all my fault."

Full of love and understanding, Grandfather looked at his grandson. "It is your fault Tommy, but God has been merciful. You disobeyed a rule set up for your protection, but it could have been worse. You could have been killed in that fire. We lost some of the barn, but not all of it. All of the animals are safe. We can rebuild. I thank God that He protected you and showed mercy!" Then his grandfather straightened up and pulled Tommy toward the house, "Come on son, we need a good breakfast and a shower, then we have some rebuilding to do!"

What were some of the consequences of Tommy's disobedience? (Fire, burned barn, and hard work to rebuild it.)

What do you think Tommy learned from the consequences?

God sometimes lets us experience the consequences of our bad choices to teach us not to make the same choice again.

Why does it matter?

Because God is Merciful, I know I am forgiven through Jesus.

Because God is Merciful, He sometimes let's me experience the consequences of my choices so that I will learn from them.
